Welcome to Lankan Pewter
Our logo's outline resembles the drop - shaped outline of the island of Sri Lanka. Lanka is the ancient Hindu name for the island dating back thousands of years. The ancient Romans knew it as Taprobane and came to trade for pearls on the West coast at Elephant Island. To the Arab traders it was Serendib, a place to trade for pearls and ivory, apes and peacocks, sapphires and rubies.
More recently the British called it Ceylon, "The Pearl of the Orient". Since regaining independance in the fifties, the former name of Sri Lanka had been reinstated. On your atlas you will find it a little to the South of the continent of India.
The island has a recorded history of over 2,000 years. Buddhism originated in India in 543 B.C. and came here shortly afterwards. There are many old temples and statues carved in the rock. Some of these statues have been the inspiration for our pewter designs. |
